104.9 - Just Not Right
Well, we’re back home, early …
Our youngest, who is Type I diabetic (insulin dependent) had a temperature of 104.9! We tried to control it, but ended up going to Eisenhower Emergency (Palm Desert/Palm Springs/Rancho Mirage) just to be sure. That emergency room was like a place I never want to go again. You really do experience the depth to which our medical system has been dragged once you enter California’s emergency rooms. I felt like I stepped into someone’s cruel idea they had in store for those requiring immediate care.
One woman had waited SEVEN HOURS to be seen. For what condition, I have no idea, but at least she was mobile and capable. Our daughter was at 103-105, tired, it was 1am, and people were coughing. By 2am, we asked the triage nurse to check her temperature - if it dropped, we’d go home. It had slipped a bit closer to 102, so the nurse gave us some tylenol, and we took her back to the house.
Yesterday morning, I jammed everything in the car, we topped her off with some more tylenol, and hit the road for the 8+ hour drive home. Both girls were tired, but I think they feel better being in their own home.
For a short vacation, it was a bust … too bad …

Awww, sorry to hear the trip got cut short, but more important that the baby is okay and that everybody is comfortable. If there is one thing worse than being sick, it is being sick away from home.

If there’s one thing worse than being sick away from home, it’s being sick and having to go to the ER in California.

I’m glad your daughter is better, Steve. And I feel your pain re: CA ERs. Although I never had to seek care in one during my two-plus year CA sojourn, I did accompany a former girlfriend to the San Ramon General (I think that’s the name of the hospital…) ER when her son got sick. It was everything you say and a bag o’ chips. Buffalo chips.

That fever is scary. Our daughter was 105 once and it scared us stiff. If the fever will come down you’re doing well.
Blessings to your family.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. As you can see from my follow-on post, I caught it as well. That equates to _ZERO_ blogging the whole time, and the whole has has been home - kids home from school and me not at work at all. By Tuesday afternoon I realized I caught it, but it didn’t hit full speed until Wednesday …
This is truly one crap-meister of a cold! We can’t remember the last time we had one like this one!
